Ukko Metsola joined CLIA on 1 September 2020 as Director General, Europe with responsibility for leading CLIA’s presence in Europe during a critical transitional phase as the cruise industry progresses with its gradual return to service.
Mr Metsola comes to CLIA following nearly 14 years with Royal Caribbean Group (RCG) where he has served as Vice President for Government Relations in Europe and Asia-Pacific since 2016 leading the development, planning and execution of RCG's policies and objectives involving legislative and regulatory matters.
Prior to joining RCG, Mr Metsola was a Partner at FIPRA International, an independent European public affairs consultancy based in Brussels. During his 10 years with FIPRA, he advised leading businesses and organisations on how to navigate complex policy landscapes and address regulatory challenges.
Mr Metsola comes from Finland and lives with his Maltese wife and their four sons.
He started his career as Political Adviser in the Finnish Parliament (2000 to 2001) and then in the Prime Minister’s Office in Helsinki (2001 to 2003). He is a graduate of the University of Helsinki, where he earned his Masters degree in International Relations, and the Harvard Kennedy School, where he studied with a Fulbright scholarship and earned his Master of Public Policy (in Business and Government).
